| Steve Bonnici |
Deputy Chair, NZBCSD (SMEs)
Managing Director, Urgent Couriers Limited
Steve started in the transport industry in 1983 and formed Urgent Couriers in 1989, specialising in on-demand courier services. Its head office is in Auckland, New Zealand, and is the largest privately owned courier company in New Zealand. Steve has an MBA from the University of Auckland.
It was whilst studying for an MBA in 1997 that Steve first started thinking about the environmental impact of the family’s courier company. Intrigued that of a two-year course, only a weekend was devoted to environmental management, Steve took up the challenge and set about improving the company’s environmental performance.
When Urgent Couriers embarked on its first sustainability report, Steve believed that its key sustainability issue was the 1100 tonnes of CO2 that the fleet emits each year. However, writing the report focused his attention on the financial sustainability of contractors in the courier industry causing a high turnover bankruptcy rate in the workforce.
Steve started as a contracted courier and understands the pressures that individual contractors face each day. Initiatives that Urgent Couriers has introduced to maintain the viability of its contractors has lead to a reduction in turnover and an increase in service standards, which, in turn, has resulted in a better bottom line for the organisation.
Urgent Couriers joined the Auckland Environment Business Network in 1997, and was invited to be a member of the New Zealand Business Council for Sustainable Development (NZBCSD) in 2000. Since joining the NZBCSD, Urgent Couriers has been an active participant in a number of projects including Sustainability Reporting (Urgent Couriers’ first report was published 2001 with the second in 2008), Climate Change Opportunities, Youth Employment, Sustainable Supply Chain, Sustainable Transport and Social Sustainability.
Steve was a member of an international panel of transport NGOs, and academic experts that developed the Transport and Logistics sector supplement for the Global Reporting Initiative during 2004/05.
Steve is married with three sons. He is a keen skier, and completed the 2004 Taupo Iron Man. |

| Sir Stephen Tindall |
Founder, The Warehouse After 12 years with retailer George Court and Sons, Stephen founded The Warehouse in 1982, with one store and $40,000 capital. The company remained in private hands until late 1994 when it floated on the New Zealand Stock Exchange. At that time Stephen assumed the role of Managing Director of The Warehouse Group Limited. Stephen formally stepped down from that role at the end of January 2001 and assumed the role of Founder. He maintains his positions on the Executive and the Board of Directors.
Since 1982, The Warehouse has risen from one man’s dream to a formidable retail brand.
Stephen leads by example. Stephen was the architect of the company’s culture and philosophy of putting people first, ensuring that all stakeholders in the business – customers, team members, suppliers, shareholders and the community – could share in the company’s success. It was his belief that growth and continued success could be assured only when the people involved could see that their contribution is recognised and appreciated.
Stephen’s personal and business successes, his charisma and generosity, and the success of the company he founded, have combined to bring him a number of personal awards and notices of recognition including: NZ Order of Merit (KNZM) 2009, Sir Peter Blake Leadership Award 2006, Deloitte Management Magazine Visionary Leader 2005, Auckland University of Technology 2002 - Honorary Doctorate, Massey University 2002 - Honorary Doctorate; Deloitte/Management Magazine "Executive of the Year" 1998; Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Management 1998; Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) 1997; New Zealand Herald "Business Person of the Year" 1997.
Stephen was one of the founding members of the NZ Business Council for Sustainable Development and was elected Chair in October 2000 -2004. In 2001, Stephen co-founded and is still Chair of the Kiwi Expat Association (Kea). More latterly, Stephen has Chaired the Climate Change Leadership Forum, Broadband Investment Forum and Co-Chaired a Job Summit Working Group. Stephen is a founding member of the NZ Institute.
Stephen and Margaret Tindall established The Tindall Foundation in 1995 with the primary aim of helping New Zealanders to reach their full potential. Then, as now, the guiding philosophy behind the work of the Foundation is to help ordinary Kiwis help others and themselves, on a hand up not a hand out basis.
Stephen was born in May 1951. He is married to Margaret and they have five grown up children. As well as his love of family and active sports, he says his special interest is in helping New Zealanders realise their full potential for their own sake and to the overall benefit of New Zealand. |
