MEMBER BENEFITS
The benefits of NZBCSD membership stem directly from our core activity of building the business case for sustainable development. Research has shown that businesses that make an effort to promote sustainable development improve their competitiveness.
The NZBCSD has about 40 member companies, all of whom share a commitment to social and environmental responsibility as well as financial success. Companies become members of the NZBCSD by invitation. This ensures that the council remains a strong group of leading businesses that are committed to learning by sharing and providing business leadership in sustainable development. Each company is represented on the Council through its CEO or a business leader of equivalent rank.
Shared Learning
One of the major benefits for our members is the opportunity for shared learning. Our members have made a commitment to contribute to a sustainable New Zealand, and in order to achieve this we encourage learning by sharing.
The NZBCSD fosters the exchange of information and practical experience between member companies, assisting these businesses to continuously improve their triple bottom line performance. This sharing of experience and best practice helps to advance sustainable development in the broader business community and in society at large.
To help our members learn by sharing, the council: arranges meetings to discuss and exchange ideas about sustainable development issues; encourages member participation within council and member-led projects; and has developed this interactive website to provide more resources and encourage discussion amongst our members and the community.
Communication
For businesses to understand and respond to sustainable development issues they need to be kept informed. To help our members learn and contribute to activities the NZBCSD communicates its activities on a regular basis. We do this by organising quarterly meetings for the whole council, by regularly updating this website, by producing business guides on sustainable development issues, and providing NZBCSD and WBCSD annual reviews and reports to all members. In this way, our members are able to anticipate emerging social and environmental trends which may impact on business activities, and access the latest thinking on business and sustainability-related issues.
The NZBCSD also provides a voice for businesses to contribute to sustainable development thinking amongst external stakeholders.
Projects
The NZBCSD undertakes a number of projects to assist and encourage members to become actively involved in sustainable development issues.
The involvement of member companies in Council projects is achieved through working groups. Experts from member businesses, along with outside specialists, are invited to participate in working groups.
Concerned with issues associated with business and sustainable development, these projects frequently develop new concepts and approaches. Therefore, all NZBCSD members benefit from these projects, which result in the sharing of experiences and best practice.
Global Network
We are part of a global network of national and regional business councils and partner organisations, under the umbrella of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD).
The WBCSD network consists of Business Councils for Sustainable Development and partner organisations in Africa, Asia, Europe, the Americas and Oceania. By being a member of this network we benefit by cooperating with others, and from being associated with a leading international body. Our partnership with the WBCSD enables us to keep in touch with the latest thinking and best practice on economic, environmental and social management in business, and offers us access to key international players and sustainable development platforms.
External Stakeholders
To achieve our mission we need active participation and dialogue with key external stakeholders. These stakeholders include the media, opinion leaders from government, international bodies, NGOs, other business groups, and the general public.
Our members benefit from us building strong relationships with these groups, as our stakeholders can help to build the credibility of sustainable development, and can enhance and extend the NZBCSD's capabilities. By understanding our aims and activities, our stakeholders will have an increased appreciation of the commitment our members have to sustainable development.
Policy Development
One of our aims is to influence the development of policy. We ensure that government policymakers are aware of, and influenced by, the voice of business. In this way, we encourage government to create a framework that best allows business to contribute effectively to sustainable development. The NZBCSD participates in policy forums and consultative processes to assist policymakers to understand issues surrounding sustainable development for business.
